Of course the first thing that you have to consider when it comes to internet marketing is your web design. Too often we see companies fail in their marketing efforts because they view web design as a platform for their webpage and that’s it. They don’t take it any further.
They fail to consider their webpage as part of their marketing strategy and in doing so they really limit the impact that their online campaign can have. Working online has plenty of advantages. As mentioned, it provides greater freedom and more versatility than offline marketing does.
It also has some very significant disadvantages. Namely that people can walk away from your advertisement or webpage a lot easier than they can an actual store. All it takes is one click. And web surfers are very click-happy, if you don’t nab their attention and get them hooked to your site in a matter of seconds they will be off clicking around somewhere else.
Importance of web page
Of course the basis for any company’s online existence is their webpage. This is their link to customers and clients. It is their shop window. Think about Christmas time and the store fronts that companies put together. They are often very elaborate and always designed to lure people into the stores.
A well designed, well targeted shop window gives customers just the right perception of the business. Its goal is to pull people from off the street and to warm them up for the purchase. The busier the street the better.
A webpage has the same purpose. Except your storefront, your homepage, has people all over the world walking past it 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
Let’s make sure that we get them inside.
There are plenty of opinions on what kind of web design is the best and what type is the most effective at drawing customers in. Essentially there is not cut and dry solution because every business will be different and so will the profiles of their target markets.
So there really are not any clear definitions of what makes a great webpage, but there certainly are some for what make a bad one.
Aesthetics
First let’s talk about aesthetics.
Some people say that ugly sells.
I don’t know about that, I definitely like things to be visually pleasing and I don’t think that I ‘m alone with that preference.
The argument goes, however, that ugly gets people’s attention and keeps it. Ugly is memorable and people are drawn to that. I guess that’s why we have such ugly people modeling our clothes and laying across the hoods of cars.
But maybe ugly sells. I’ve certainly heard success stories. If you like ugly then you are at least going to have some people agree that your site is on the right track.
What definitely does not sell is clutter and chaos.
Remember that people are click happy. If their eyes hurt because your site is too loud or the contrast is too sharp then they are going to leave.
It is also important that you don’t do too much. Depending on your target market you can incorporate features onto your site that are very effective. A music producer’s page that plays a hit song can be a good feature. But overdoing it, incorporating too many special effects, negates your efforts and detracts from your site and its message.
Think about the goal of your site. If you are trying to sell a product or provide information to your market then you have to ensure that your web design does not overshadow the pages’ content.
At the same time, you do want your page to stand out and be at least somewhat memorable. This means not using the same cookie-cutter design that everyone else has. You can buy template software that will help you piece together a quick site, but you know what, it will look like a quickly pieced together site. It will not create impact.
You also have to ensure that people will be able to navigate successfully through your site. Have a path clearly laid out for them so that they can find what they are looking for and so that they see the features that you want to highlight.
Your webpage is your presence online – remember that. Would you set up a store or office without caring what it looked like, or what impression it gave?
Not if you hoped to have any kind of success.
Your webpage needs to be designed to match the image of your company and appeal to the market that you are targeting. Whatever strategy you choose it should communicate the message that you want to send through its aesthetics and layout.
If you want to foster trust and a sense of professionalism then you need to put resources into developing a site that looks professional.
Of course, it won't matter what your site looks like if no one can find it. And this leads us to SEO, search engine optimization.
Tableless Web Design
Tableless Web design is the art of building websites without resorting to the use of tables primarily for the purpose of making your website Search Engine Friendly. Instead of tables CSS (Cascading Style Sheets) positioning is used to arrange elements and text on a web page. CSS was introduced by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) to improve web accessibility and to make HTML code semantic rather than presentational.
