Email Marketing for Current and Prospective Customers

Email marketing has been proven to be an effective marketing method.  The days of sending mail to an actual mailbox are gone. Today, if you want to send a personalized message to people, you need to do it through email.
Connect with Your Audience with a Personalized Message

An email campaign needs to be personal.  When someone opens up their email and sees a personal message, they are much more likely to read it.  This gives a company an increased chance of making a sale.
One way to personalize a message, if the person has been a customer of yours in the past, is to mention a product or service they purchased. This affords you the opportunity to cross sell them on related products and/or services. Another way is to simply find ways to address them by name. This small detail can make a potential customer more likely to read your email because it is specifically addressed to them.

Use a Catching Subject Line

In addition to personalizing the message, you also want to make sure you have a subject line that will draw the recipient in. The recipient needs to have a good reason to open the email. A poorly written subject header can not only result in the recipient not reading your message, but it can also cause your company’s email address to be marked as spam by the recipient, making it impossible to make further offers to them via email. Write a subject header which makes the recipient want to spend time reading what you have to say. If they do not think they will benefit, they will not open the email. As such, it is vital to develop a subject line which will grab their attention.

Write Selling Content

The best subject line and personalization tactics will not save subpar content. While it is important to make sure the recipient reads the email, content is just as important. There are two different types of email marketing campaigns, and the content will depend on the type of campaign. If you are marketing to a new customer who has not purchased your product or service before, your email should use sales language. Give them reasons to become a customer.  Use bullet points and persuasive language. The goal of this type of email campaign is to get new customers, so write in a way that makes them want to buy.

If you are writing to existing customers, however, you should use a more familiar tone.  Thank them for being a customer and then let them know about other products they might be interested in.  Explain the other products and try to get the person to buy from your company again. Even if they decide not to buy right then, a polite, more familiar tone will encourage them to consider you in the future far more than an overtly sales-oriented letter.

Avoid Spam Filter Buzzwords

When writing the content, it is essential you do not use language that will cause your email to end up in a spam folder.  Spam filters are designed to weed out language that is clearly designed to sell a product. Words and phrases like “free,” “all new” and “risk free” all trigger spam filters. Avoiding these phrases will ensure that your email actually makes it to the recipient’s inbox. Instead, try to find a different way to say a given phrase if it is likely to trigger spam filters. For instance, “At no cost to you” is a great way to get the message out for a free offer without alerting the spam filters.

Another way to avoid spam filters is to encourage your current customers to include you in their email address book. This allows you to not have to worry about avoiding spam buzzwords for emails to existing customers.  Even the best email will occasionally be tripped up by the filters, so this approach can help maximize the number of recipients of a given email.
