Effective Press Release Strategies

A press release should pop off the page and entice the reader.  There are certain things you can do with a press release to grab the attention of readers and make them want more.  If you want the best press release possible, you need to make sure you incorporate the right strategies.

Winning over the Reader with Good Headlines: How to Entice the Reader with a Punchy Headline and Why this Header is a Bad Example for Doing That

A strong press release headline should explain what the release is about. In the above example, we have accomplished that: the header explains that this section is about constructing a good headline, and so far the content is living up to that promise. However, your headline also needs to be concise and to the point. It also needs to let the reader know what they will be getting if they read the release in as few words as possible. As such, keep your headlines at 20 words or less. The above headline is 27 words. Notice how ugly it looks on the page, and how your attention starts to drift partway through it. While press release headlines are longer than traditional headlines, they still need to be as direct and to the point as possible to avoid losing the reader before they ever start reading.  Thus, construct an informative and exciting headline that will draw the reader in.  Give them a reason to read the body of the press release.  If you do not catch them with the headline, they will not read any further.

Press Releases Must Actually Be News

This is where many people make a mistake. They think they can write a press release about anything.  While in theory you can, doing so will not benefit your company. Instead, stick to exciting and newsworthy information.  If you have a new addition to the company, that is a newsworthy item.  If you are offering a huge sale, that is also a newsworthy item. Find something people will be interested in and then craft a press release based on that information.

If your company creates a name for itself by saturating the market with bland press releases, no one will care when you do actually have someone newsworthy to say. In fact, people will likely stop reading your press releases at all.  Consider your topics carefully and only use press releases for the items that are breaking news. Ask yourself whether a newspaper would run your press release. If they wouldn’t, you probably shouldn’t. This will allow you to get much further with press releases.

Make Sure Search Engines See It

The press release needs to use the right keywords.  Internet search engines index information based on keywords and relevancy.  You need to make sure you incorporate the right keywords so people can find your press release easily.

In order to find the right keywords, you will need to research the competition and the market.  Then, you will find a list of keywords that will improve your chances of your press release being viewed by your customer base.   Those keywords will need to be incorporated into your copy in order to generate the best results.  This is vital if you are going to funnel traffic to your website from your press release.
